Iontophoresis
Iontophoresis is a drug delivery system administered to the body without the use of hypodermic needles. The medication is delivered through transporting soluble ions across intact skin using two electrodes and a mild current.
The drug most commonly used at Reinhold Rehabilitation is Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate, which is a steroidal anti-inflammatory. This medication needs to be prescribed by a doctor.
Most people experience no pain, but a mild tingling sensation under the electrodes. The steroidal anti-inflammatories are applied directly through the skin at the site of pain, so there are no systemic effects such as weight gain or an upset stomach. There is a small percentage of people (less than 1%) who may experience an immune response which presents itself as small tiny hives at the site of the electrode application.
